“The blessedness and the blessing of God’s Word is only to be known by doing it” – Andrew Murray
Sometimes it is really hard to obey God. Sometimes it feels as if He is backing us up to the edge of a cliff and asking us to take a leap of faith. Sometimes what He is asking us to do doesn’t add up and doesn’t make sense.
I find a lot of times, I try to reason with God. I mean, look at this God. You really want me to do that? Are you sure? Do you realize what would happen? Do know what people would think? Come on, God. It just doesn’t make sense.
The fact of the matter is that God knows our situation better than we know our situation. He knows what we’re going through more than we know what we’re going through. Read this verse from Luke 11:28:
“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Did you catch that? This is Jesus talking. He is says, guess what, if you hear the word of God and obey it, you are blessed. If you are obedient to the will of God, you will be blessed.
If we take Jesus at His word, we have nothing to fear. We have no reason to make excuses to God. We shouldn’t question God’s prompting. Why? Because Jesus says that if we obey God we are blessed.
This means that even though the way seems scary. Even though the path God is leading us down doesn’t make sense. Even though people might think we’re crazy, God will bless us throughout our obedience.
What Jesus is telling us here is when we follow the road God has laid for us, our way is blessed. God’s hand has touched the path we are going to follow. God has gone before us and prepared things in advance. Wherever we walk when following the will of God is holy ground.
When Mary was told that she would be with child, I’m sure she was worried what people might think. A young, unmarried woman who is now pregnant could start a lot of rumors. I’m sure she knew God’s will didn’t add up. I’m sure she saw that her calling didn’t make sense.
But, she was obedient.
She heard the will of God and followed it. Because of her obedience, her way was blessed. When she went to speak to Elizabeth, God guided her steps. When she went with Joseph to Bethlehem, God went before her and prepared the way. When she and Joseph fled to Egypt, they walked on holy ground the whole way.
When we are obedient to the will of God, He will bless us.
Parents: Read your children this verse from Luke. Ask them what they think it means.
